Swinging my helmet, I chortle.

What joy to chase their fleeing dust!

I do not see

why the general yanks his reins

and raises his flag to retreat.

Five decades pass. A magistrate,

I have proof of treason. Eunuchs,

teeth sharp as wolves’,

stop me, and then I realize

too late: I have no flag to raise.

No one will speak for me at court.

I give bribes to my former men,

then flee in shame

to a mountain hut, and ponder

what my general knew so well.
